Seven Resourcing are currently recruiting for a Senior Accountancy Technician to join a busy local authority finance team in Crewe, Cheshire. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional with strong local government accounting, budget management, and financial reporting experience to contribute to the effective management of public sector resources.
The Role
As a Senior Accountancy Technician, you will provide, manage, and develop high-quality financial support and advisory services to designated service areas. You will work closely with operational managers to ensure sound financial planning, robust budget monitoring, and compliance with statutory regulations and Council financial procedures.
This role is ideal for candidates with experience in local authority finance, public sector accounting, capital and revenue budgeting, and financial analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise and liaise with operational managers to prepare and maintain detailed capital and revenue budgets in line with Financial Standing Orders and corporate policies.
- Collate, analyse and interpret financial information to support effective decision-making and resource management.
- Contribute to the preparation of financial reports for committees, ensuring all resource implications are clearly identified.
- Support the preparation of final accounts, statutory returns, and grant claims in line with regulatory deadlines.
- Maintain and develop computerised accounting systems to meet service and corporate reporting requirements.
- Monitor performance against financial targets and recommend corrective action where required.
- Ensure accurate income accounting and initiate payments to optimise cash flow.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal services, schools, suppliers, and external stakeholders.
- Supervise and support Accounting Technicians and finance trainees, contributing to team development and technical capability.
- You may be required to undertake duties across different locations within Cheshire East to ensure effective service delivery.
Candidate Requirements
To be successful in this Senior Finance Officer / Senior Accountancy Technician role, you should have:
Qualifications
- Membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or equivalent professional qualification, or Degree-level qualification in Accountancy, Finance, or a related field.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
Experience
- Extensive post-qualification experience in a finance or local authority accounting environment.
- Experience supporting capital and revenue budget management.
- Experience preparing financial reports, returns, and statutory accounts.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior finance staff.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of local government finance regulations and accounting standards.
- Knowledge of statutory obligations, financial legislation, and codes of practice.
- Sound understanding of audit principles, risk management, and financial planning.
- Working knowledge of financial systems and advanced IT skills (including PC-based accounting systems).
- Understanding of data protection, confidentiality, and Freedom of Information requirements.
