Overview

Join our team and embark on a 5.5-year electro‑mechanical engineering degree apprenticeship providing you with hands‑on experience working on a range of engineering projects alongside academic study.

You’ll work across our business while studying part‑time at the University of Nottingham for a fully‑funded BEng (Hons) in Electro‑mechanical Engineering.

The apprenticeship is delivered by block release via blended learning, with each year further building on your knowledge and skills.

The programme is typically delivered over five and a half years, at which point successful apprentices will be awarded a BEng (Hons) Electro‑mechanical Engineering Degree and progress onto a gateway review and end‑point assessment to complete their Electro‑mechanical Engineer Degree Apprenticeship.

The programme is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

  • What you’ll do
  • Learn practical, technical and management engineering skills from our Sesame Engineers, who jointly have over 200 years of industry‑based engineering experience between them!
  • Manufacture, install and service our award‑winning Sesame wheelchair lifts, across the globe
  • Diagnose engineering problems and find solutions
  • Work in some of the most prestigious buildings in the world. For example, the Bank of England, UK Supreme Court, LA Clippers Basketball Stadium (USA), Kensington Palace.
  • Travel overseas on Sesame installations and servicing. For example USA, Australia, Europe and other countries where we land new orders!
  • Be the third L6 Degree Apprentice we have taken on.

Our first L6 Degree Apprentice (Electro‑Mechanical Engineering, University of Nottingham) started in September 2022 and has just completed his year 4 exams.

He is on target for a 2:1 Degree, which is amazing.

Our second L6 Degree Apprentice (also Electro‑Mechanical Engineering, University of Nottingham) started in September 2025 and has just completed his year 1 exams and is doing fantastically well.

We have a strong L6 Degree Apprentice Programme, and we know what works.

The Sesame Team are excited to work with our next Level 6 apprentice.

  • Work with Sesame CAD drawings when manufacturing and servicing our lifts
  • Gain confidence in a supported work environment, whilst gaining your engineering skills and qualifications.
  • Enjoy our Sesame summer BBQs, parties and annual subsidised ski trip to Poland (to visit the Sesame Design Team).

Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including Grade 4 or above in English language and Grade 5 or above in maths.
  • 3 A-levels (or equivalent) with at least a Grade B in A-level maths and two additional A-levels at Grade B (or equivalent).

Note: citizenship skills, general studies, and critical thinking are not accepted.

  • OR a relevant BTEC engineering qualification, a preceding level apprenticeship, or equivalent demonstrable work experience in the field, which we will review on a case‑by‑case basis.
  • Logistics
  • Your base location will be Sesame Access Systems Ltd, Unit 1, Cumberland Works, Wintersells Business Park, Byfleet, Surrey KT147LF.

Travel will be into London, UK wide or overseas.

Passport is essential.

  • Your degree will be completed on a block‑release basis, with approximately four five‑day blocks at the University of Nottingham campus. We will pay for travel/hotel costs.
  • We offer a starting salary of £26,000, with potential for pay progression throughout your apprenticeship based on academic and placement performance.
  • Working hours Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm (45 hours per week) plus optional overtime on Saturdays if required
  • Our benefits package includes a pension scheme, 20 days’ holiday (increases with length of employment) plus bank holidays and other benefits (Sesame ski trip (subsidised), cycle to work scheme
