Principal Accountant (Contract – Remote/Warkwickshire)

Job Overview: The Principal Accountant
As a Principal Accountant , you will be responsible for overseeing critical aspects of financial management, ensuring compliance with legislation, and supporting strategic decision-making across the council. This role requires a highly skilled professional capable of managing complex financial tasks, leading on critical projects, and providing expert advice to senior stakeholders.
Candidate Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation, monitoring, and reporting of revenue and capital budgets.
- Ensure statutory compliance and adherence to council financial policies.
- Manage the annual Statement of Accounts process, including statutory reporting and external audit liaison.
- Provide high-level financial advice to senior officers and elected members.
- Lead on specialist financial areas such as Treasury Management, Housing, or strategic projects.
- Use financial management systems and complex spreadsheets with precision and timeliness.
- Support effective financial decision-making throughout the organisation.
Candidate Requirements
- CCAB qualified accountant with 3+ years’ post-qualification public sector experience, or relevant senior experience with Senior AAT or part-qualified CCAB status.
- Strong understanding of local government finance, accounting standards, and statutory Codes of Practice.
- Proven experience working with financial management systems and complex spreadsheets.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging with senior officers, members, and external auditors.
