About the role
A clinically led independent provider is expanding its Adult Autism Spectrum Disorder service and is looking for an experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse to join its multidisciplinary diagnostic pathway. You’ll carry out ADI-R developmental assessments with adults, work alongside an ADOS-2 assessor, and help reach diagnostic decisions collaboratively. You’ll also take part in joint diagnostic feedback appointments and may provide post-diagnostic support. The service has a strong focus on quality, governance and compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming care.
Key responsibilities
- Undertake structured ADI-R developmental assessments with adults referred to the autism diagnostic pathway
- Gather and evaluate developmental, collateral and clinical information
- Explore autism-related presentation across the lifespan, including functional impact and co-occurring neurodevelopmental or mental health presentations
- Contribute to multidisciplinary diagnostic discussions, integrating your findings with ADOS-2 results and other evidence
- Identify diagnostic uncertainty or complexity and elevate appropriately
- Take part in joint diagnostic feedback appointments, giving clear, sensitive and neurodiversity-affirming explanations
- Provide post-diagnostic psychoeducation and support, including strengths and needs, reasonable adjustments and onward support
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation
- Work within professional standards, safeguarding requirements and clinical governance processes
Essential requirements
- Current NMC registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RNMH), with no restrictions incompatible with the role
- Formal ADI-R training, with demonstrated competence in administration, scoring and clinical interpretation
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in neurodevelopmental diagnostic services, including conducting ADI‑R assessments with adults
- Experience contributing to multidisciplinary autism diagnostic decision‑making, formulation and feedback
- Experience assessing adults with complex or co‑occurring neurodevelopmental and mental health presentations
- Ability to produce clear, clinically robust assessment documentation and reports
- Strong knowledge of adult autism and how it presents across individuals and the lifespan
- Understanding of safeguarding, risk management, professional accountability and clinical governance
- A commitment to person‑centred, neurodiversity‑affirming practice
Desirable
- Experience in NHS or NHS‑commissioned adult neurodevelopmental services
- Experience with EMIS and Heidi (or a comparable AI medical scribe / ambient documentation tool)
- Postgraduate training in autism, neurodevelopmental assessment, psychological intervention or a related area
Who we’re looking for
An experienced clinician who combines structured assessment with thoughtful clinical reasoning. You’ll be comfortable with diagnostic complexity and uncertainty, confident working autonomously within your competence, and just as keen on collaborative decision‑making. Professionalism, sound clinical judgement and attention to detail are essential.
