An adult autism diagnostic service is seeking an experienced Speech and Language Therapist or Occupational Therapist to undertake face-to-face ADOS-2 Module 4 assessments in Redditch and other locations across Worcestershire. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute observational findings to diagnostic decision-making and take part in joint diagnostic feedback appointments. You will work alongside a Clinical Psychologist or Registered Mental Health Nurse who undertakes the developmental history and wider clinical assessment. Together, you will integrate developmental, clinical and observational evidence to support robust, person-centred diagnostic outcomes. There may also be opportunities to contribute to post-diagnostic support for adults following assessment.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake face-to-face ADOS-2 Module 4 assessments with adults referred to the autism diagnostic pathway, in line with recognised administration standards, current NICE guidance and agreed service protocols.
  • Administer and score the ADOS-2 accurately and consistently.
  • Record clear, clinically relevant behavioural observations arising from assessments.
  • Contribute ADOS-2 findings and professional observations to multidisciplinary diagnostic discussions.
  • Identify when observational findings are mixed, inconclusive or require further clinical consideration.
  • Participate in joint diagnostic feedback appointments alongside the clinician responsible for the developmental history.
  • Communicate assessment findings clearly and sensitively, using a neurodiversity-affirming approach.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Work in accordance with professional standards, safeguarding requirements and clinical governance processes.

  • At least two years’ experience undertaking autism diagnostic assessments, including regular use of ADOS-2 Module 4 with adults.
  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary diagnostic decision-making and diagnostic feedback.
  • Experience working with adults with complex or overlapping neurodevelopmental and mental health presentations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, clinically robust documentation.

Essential knowledge and skills

  • Strong knowledge of adult autism presentations, including subtle presentations and masking or camouflaging.
  • High level of competence in ADOS-2 administration and scoring.
  • Understanding of the strengths and limitations of the ADOS-2 as one part of a broader autism diagnostic assessment.
  • Knowledge of current NICE guidance relating to the identification, assessment and diagnosis of autism in adults.
  • Ability to distinguish behavioural observations from wider diagnostic conclusions.
  • Ability to present assessment findings clearly within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, professional accountability and clinical governance.
  • Commitment to person-centred, neurodiversity-affirming clinical practice.

Desirable

  • Substantial experience administering ADOS-2 Module 4 with verbally fluent adults.
  • Experience working in NHS or NHS-commissioned adult neurodevelopmental services.
  • Experience using an online clinical system such as EMIS and Heidi, or a comparable AI medical scribe or ambient clinical documentation tool.
  • Additional postgraduate training in autism or neurodevelopmental assessment.

About the role

This role sits within a multidisciplinary adult autism diagnostic pathway. You will work alongside a clinician responsible for the developmental history and wider clinical assessment. Diagnostic decisions are reached collaboratively through multidisciplinary discussion, integrating developmental history, clinical information, available collateral evidence and direct observational findings. The role does not routinely include responsibility for developmental history assessments, ongoing post-diagnostic intervention or independent case management. Following diagnostic decision-making, you will participate in joint diagnostic feedback with the developmental-history clinician.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced ADOS-2 clinician who is confident undertaking adult Module 4 assessments and contributing thoughtful observational evidence to multidisciplinary diagnostic decision-making. You will bring strong assessment skills, sound professional judgement and attention to detail, alongside a clear understanding that the ADOS-2 is one component of a broader diagnostic process.
