Location: Huddersfield. Client: Kirklees Council. Contract Type: Temporary (Initially 3 months). Hours: 30 hours P/W. Salary: £15.66 per hour (Umbrella).

About the Role

As a Passenger Assistant, you will support children with special educational needs and day care clients during transport to and from school or day care. You will ensure passenger safety, assist with personal and medical needs, and support the driver in operating vehicle access equipment. You may be required to work across various routes in Kirklees and attend Council‑organised training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure passenger safety and wellbeing during transport.
  • Monitor transport contracts and report breaches.
  • Safely carry items such as dinner money, medicines, and messages.
  • Secure clients’ homes and assist with boarding.
  • Operate and support vehicle access equipment.
  • Safely hand over passengers to responsible adults.
  • Administer emergency medication and first aid.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and liaise with emergency services.
  • Use Team‑Teach techniques to manage challenging behaviour.
  • Maintain passenger hygiene and dispose of waste safely.
  • Handle sensitive medical information confidentially.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience caring for children or adults.
  • Experience providing assistance and support.
  • Experience working with individuals with restricted mobility or challenging behaviour.
  • Experience working to health and safety policies.
  • Experience inspecting others’ performance.

Skills & Competencies

  • Hold or be willing to obtain a First Aid certificate.
  • Flexible with working hours, locations, and vehicle types.
  • Able to work independently and adapt to changing routes.
  • Communicative and respectful.
  • Able to follow medical advice and emergency procedures.

Additional Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS and barred list check required.
  • Must pass a standard medical screening.
  • Willingness to travel to pickup points without reimbursement.
  • Participation in Council training is mandatory.
