Manchester City Council is seeking an experienced Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join its Emergency Duty Service (EDS). This specialist out-of-hours team responds to urgent mental health and adult social care emergencies across the city when daytime services are closed. You will be part of a small, highly skilled team comprising 7 AMHPs, a Social Care Assessor and a Team Manager, providing a critical frontline response in complex and high-risk situations. This is a lone-working role suited to a confident and autonomous practitioner who thrives in fast-paced emergency work. Shifts operate on a 7-week rolling rota, including evenings, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Responsibilities
- Undertake Mental Health Act assessments in a range of settings, including community, hospitals, and places of safety.
- Respond to urgent adult social care and safeguarding emergencies outside standard office hours.
- Make independent, legally sound decisions under the Mental Health Act and Care Act.
- Liaise closely with police, health services, crisis teams, and other emergency professionals.
- Complete high-quality reports, legal documentation, and case recordings.
- Manage risk effectively while working autonomously during unsocial hours.
Requirements
- Hold a recognised Social Work qualification and be registered with Social Work England.
- Be a qualified and currently approved AMHP.
- Have substantial experience undertaking MHA assessments and emergency statutory work.
- Be able to provide proof of AMHP approval, evidence of required training hours, and supervision records.
- If currently employed, provide confirmation from your AMHP Lead/Local Authority that there are no restrictions on undertaking this role.
- Demonstrate strong decision-making skills and confidence in lone working.
