Revenue Officer (Council Tax & Recovery) – Lewisham
£25.07 per hour (Umbrella) • Year-long Temporary Contract
Service Care Solutions are delighted to be recruiting for an experienced Revenue Officer to join a local authority based in Lewisham on a 12-month temporary contract. This is a varied and highly responsible role, ideal for someone with strong knowledge of Council Tax legislation, recovery processes, and court procedures, who is confident dealing with complex cases, enforcement activity, and customer enquiries.
Key Responsibilities- Administer Council Tax and other revenue accounts in line with legislation, financial procedures and recovery timetables
- Respond effectively to enquiries by telephone, correspondence, face-to-face and electronic channels
- Recover outstanding debts efficiently and lawfully, including processing discounts, exemptions and reliefs
- Prepare and present cases at Magistrates' Court, County Court, High Court and Tribunals
- Represent the Council at Liability Order hearings, committal hearings, charging orders and bankruptcy proceedings
- Liaise with Enforcement Agents, solicitors, process servers and other collection agents, monitoring performance and reporting concerns
- Prepare cases for insolvency, committal, warrants of arrest and statutory demands, maintaining accurate records throughout
- Deal with complex queries and complaints, identifying service improvements where appropriate
- Submit irrecoverable debt for write-off in line with delegated powers and audit requirements
- Maintain accurate systems, records and statistics to meet audit and GDPR requirements
- Build effective working relationships with internal departments and external partners to support collection activity
- Support team performance through mentoring, quality checks and contribution to process improvements
- Proven experience working in Council Tax / Revenues within a local authority
- Strong working knowledge of Council Tax legislation, recovery methods and court processes
- Experience preparing and presenting cases at court or tribunals
- Confidence dealing with enforcement agents, insolvency and complex recovery cases
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, administration and case management skills
- Ability to manage a high-volume workload in a regulated environment
