Role Purpose: To support pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in accessing the curriculum, developing social and communication skills, and managing emotional and behavioural needs in a safe, inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism, both in and out of the classroom.
- Support pupils with communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation.
- Assist the class teacher in delivering differentiated learning activities tailored to individual needs.
- Implement strategies outlined in EHCPs, IEPs, and behaviour support plans.
- Use visual timetables, structured routines, and sensory strategies to support learning.
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive behaviour.
- Support pupils during transitions, break times, and unstructured activities.
- Monitor and record progress, behaviour, and achievements, providing feedback to teachers and SENCOs.
- Promote inclusion and ensure pupils are fully supported within the school environment.
- Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and parents/carers.
- Follow safeguarding, health & safety, and school policies at all times.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Experience working with children or young people with autism (school, care, or support setting).
- Strong understanding of ASC needs, including sensory processing and communication differences.
- Calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support strategies.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education.
Desirable (Not Essential):
- Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
- SEN training (ASC, ADHD, SEMH).
- Experience with PECS, Makaton, or visual communication systems.
- Team Teach or de-escalation training.
