Associate Director – Highways Infrastructure

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Associate Director to join a growing consultancy as part of their expanding North West team, based in central Manchester. The role will focus on the delivery of major public‑sector funded highway infrastructure projects across the North West and Yorkshire, with a strong emphasis on early‑stage pre‑contract project management. You will take a lead role in project delivery, client management, and team leadership, while also contributing to the regional business development strategy and management of key client accounts.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of major public‑sector highway infrastructure projects
- Oversee early‑stage, pre‑contract project management activities
- Manage project programmes, budgets, and commercial considerations
- Develop consultant briefs and manage large, multidisciplinary project teams
- Chair and lead project meetings
- Liaise with statutory stakeholders (e.g. National Highways, Network Rail, Environment Agency)
- Produce bespoke project documentation, including procurement, land acquisition, and PR & communications strategies
- Support senior regional management with opportunity development and client account management
Qualifications – Essential
- Proven experience delivering highway infrastructure projects for public sector clients
- Strong pre‑contract project management experience
- Sound understanding of key commercial and contractual project issues
- Knowledge of the UK planning process (EIA, ES, discharge of conditions)
- Experience managing programmes and budgets
- Confident stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams
Qualifications – Desirable
- Knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts
- Experience in cost and risk management
- Understanding of government or combined authority funding processes
- Familiarity with WebTAG, DMRB, or similar government guidance
- Knowledge of land acquisition processes, including CPO
- Awareness of procurement legislation and project governance
