Job Description

Service Care Solutions are recruiting on behalf of a local authority in Worcestershire for a VAT Consultant to join the team on a temporary basis. The postholder will provide advice and support on all VAT matters, optimising VAT recovery, and supporting financial planning and reporting, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide specialist VAT advice, including on capital projects, property transactions, contracts, grants and funding arrangements
• Ensure compliance with HMRC VAT legislation and requirements, including preparation and review of accurate VAT returns.
• Manage and advise on partial exemption calculations, VAT recovery and Section 33 arrangements, identifying opportunities for savings and efficiencies.
• Monitor changes to VAT legislation and HMRC guidance, assessing their impact and providing clear advice to both finance and non finance colleagues.
• Support HMRC enquiries, internal and external audits, while maintaining robust VAT records, policies, procedures and internal controls.

Candidate Criteria

• Qualified accountant, with extensive local authority experience and knowledge of UK VAT legislation
• Effective communicator, able to liaise with HMRC and deal with enquiries, as well as leading and working as part of a team.
• Experience in systems such as TechnologyOne ERP system, as well as Microsoft Excel.
