Service Care Legal are working with a Local Authority in Sussex seeking an experienced Principal Litigation Solicitor to join their Legal Services team on an interim basis.
Location: Sussex / remote
Rate: Β£60ph LTD / Β£52.79ph PAYE inc. holiday pay / Β£47.11ph PAYE exc. holiday pay
Contract: 37 hours per week, 6 months with possibility of extension. Please note that this role requires office attendance 1 day per week.
Role Overview β Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice, representation and advocacy across the Council on licensing, environmental health, housing, property litigation, prosecutions, judicial review, regulatory and general litigation matters.
- Manage a complex and varied litigation caseload with minimal supervision, representing the Council at courts, tribunals, inquiries, committees and public meetings.
- Act as a trusted adviser to Members and senior officers, including attendance at statutory and committee meetings on behalf of the Monitoring Officer.
- Support the operational management of the Legal Services team, including mentoring, coaching and developing staff.
- Contribute to service planning, policy development and the delivery of a high-quality, cost-effective legal service.
Person Specification
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent).
- Strong experience of complex litigation within a local government context, including civil and criminal matters.
- In-depth knowledge of local authority legislation, court and committee procedures, and judicial review.
- Confident advocate with experience representing or advising at courts, tribunals, inquiries and committees.
