The primary purpose of this demanding and influential singleton military role in Army HQ is to champion and develop Innovation's contribution to Army Modernisation, responding to threats and seizing novel opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  • Test the Army's Innovation Strategy against Army and Defence priorities, aligned with UK Defence Innovation and Defence Reform.
  • Design a costed annual Command Innovation programme; oversee its delivery, reporting performance and risk.
  • Sponsor and direct horizon scanning and tech watch activity, focused on Next and Future epochs, delivering a bi-annual threat-led technology assessment.
  • Hunt and seize exploitation opportunities to accelerate innovative technology to address operational threats and to Modernise.
  • Lead the Army Innovation incubator, for potential capabilities en route to Research and Experimentation or Military Capability Plans.
  • Deliver flagship Army innovation projects.
  • Provide military S&T advice to Army senior leadership via close liaison with Dstl.
  • Deputise for Dep Hd Innovation (Grade 6), act as Critical Friend with UKDI, other military commands, Dstl and OGD. Mentor to 1 x OF2 and a team of junior CS.
