A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (or equivalent) to serve as Station Flight Safety Officer at Leuchars Station on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCo S), with an initial proposed start date of 04 January 2027 or earlier/later subject to candidate status.

Leuchars Aerodrome (LA) is located within the Army run Leuchars Station and is primarily a 24/7 diversion option for FJ aircraft operating from RAF Lossiemouth and other airfields.

The aerodrome also supports 6 Flying Training School Tutors as well as hosting many other UK and Allied aviation exercises.

LA comprises around 70 tight nit RAF and civilian personnel.

The post requires a highly motivated person who will work to maintain and improve Total Safety.

The incumbent will also provide line management for Civil Servants and provides opportunity for wider service in an executive capacity.

As Station Flight Safety Officer for LA you will be responsible for

  • Working with the RAF Lossiemouth Safety Centre and the Leuchars Station Hub, to promote an effective Flight Safety, Error Management and Foreign Object Damage (FOD) protection culture at LDA as well as promoting Functional Safety, Quality Assurance and Continuous Development as part of Total Safety.
  • Providing specialist Air Safety advice and support to the SATCO (OC LA) and the Aerodrome Operator (OC Operations Support Wing, RAF Lossiemouth).
  • Organising regular Safety Meetings and attending other meetings where Safety is on the agenda, recording minutes and tracking actions.
  • Management and co-ordination of the LA Defence Aerodrome Manual (DAM) including the Aerodrome Operator’s Hazard Log (AOHL) and the Flying Order Book.
  • Management and co-ordination of the Defence Aerodrome Assurance Framework (DAAF).
  • Management and co-ordination of the Aerodrome Safety Case (Ad SC).
  • Delivering an effective Aviation Error Management System.
  • Management of Low Flying Complaints made to the Unit and proactive engagement with the local community.
  • Acting as a Human Factors (HF) Facilitator to ensure HF currency is maintained at LA.

Acting as an XO function for the unit where required, including projects such as visits, exercise planning and Transition to Conflict initiatives.

  • In the event of an aircraft incident, facilitating the requirements of the RAF Service Inquiry Team.

Acting (when required) as deputy to OC LA with respect to management of LA, liaison with the Hub and with the Station Executives at RAF Lossiemouth.

  • May be required to perform Civil Service (CS) Line Management duties for CS Air and Space Operations Specialists (ASOS).
