| The MAB Afghan Inquiry Response Unit (MAIRU), established by HQ MAB, is a specialist 35-person team (Tri and Civil Service). Its primary responsibilities include managing MAB engagement with the IIRTA (in coordination with the MOD’s Afghan Inquiry Response Unit), overseeing MAB disclosure processes, protecting MAB national security equities, and guiding MAB policy, evidence and strategy in relation to the IIRTA (Dir MAB’s highest non-operational priority). Additionally, MAIRU is tasked with providing witness support to individuals affected by the IIRTA via its Witness Support Team; the largest of its kind in Defence. As MAIRU SO2 Legal, you will be the supporting legal advisor to the HQ on IIRTA matter. The role directly supports ALS SO1 LEGAD. It covers legal advice on a broad range of administrative and operational areas spanning the period under the IIRTA’s terms of reference up to the present day. The position offers unique access into all of MAB’s functional areas, direct insight into the thinking of MOD’s senior leadership, and the workings of a Department of State. The job requires routine engagement with senior MAB leadership, MOD policy teams, external counsel (currently four KCs and several other barristers instructed), MODLA, the Government Litigation Department, CSOC, and other stakeholders providing input into the IIRTA. |
