Futures and Force Design devises and implements strategic foresight, concepts, capability strategy and warfare development to drive future force capability enhancements, adaptations and optimisations to the UK’s Armed Forces. SO2 Warfare Development 6 assists within the Understand pillar that identifies and drives WarDev activity to address military strategic problems and risks manifesting within a five-year time horizon.
Responsibilities
- Engage pan-MSHQ, including with the relevant Strategic Cycles, to ensure understanding of current insights, risks, Problem Statements, Audits, and innovation, wargaming and experimentation requirements to identify WarDev activity opportunities.
- Assist in the governance of the Military Strategic Lessons eco-system to ensure the timely processing and implementation of strategic operations-facing lessons. This includes oversight of the lesson’s aspects of JSP 441.
- Perform secretariat duties for the AH Strategic WarDev chaired Military Strategic Lessons Working Group.
- Commission analysis on specific MSHQ derived topics to develop strategic lessons, presenting sentencing activity to the Integrated Warfare Board for validation and implementation.
- Oversee Defence Doctrine reviews and provide prioritisation guidance to the Defence Doctrine team.
- Deputise for SO1 Warfare Development 1, when required.
Local Considerations
The primary work location is MOD Main Building, Whitehall, London for a minimum of 3 days per week. Acceptable to WFH or from alternate MOD site on the other days. Requirement for regular UK and occasional overseas travel.

This is a new role within a new organisation. This appointment requires a highly capable OF3 with the ability to operate at the strategic level with the intellectual agility to quickly assimilate and manage several concurrent high-profile activities and projects. Previous experience of working within a Defence warfare centre would be a substantial benefit.
