A vacancy has arisen for an OF4 to serve within the Defence Futures and Force Design team in the Military Strategic Headquarters (MSHQ) as Warfare Development 3. The role is based in MOD Main Building and will be delivered under Additional Duty Commitment (ADC) Terms and Conditions of Service (TaCoS), with an initial start date of 31 Jul 26. The position will require up to 180 days per year. Although the role is primarily Main Building based, there is scope for flexible and remote working. This is an opportunity to help shape how Defence fights and wins tomorrow.

Working within the Strategic Warfare Development team at the heart of the Military Strategic Headquarters, you will influence how the current force is optimised to meet rapidly evolving threats. Drawing on lessons from operations, experimentation, wargaming and innovation, you will translate insight into action to deliver tangible change within a 0–5 year horizon. You will operate at the strategic level, working with senior leaders across Defence and allies to enhance warfighting readiness across the Integrated Force.

You will support the delivery of the Integrated Warfare Board, the governance mechanism for Warfare Development activity, and contribute to the expansion and exploitation of Defence’s strategic lessons capability. This role offers a rare opportunity to operate at the strategic centre and directly influence Defence readiness and capability development.

Unit Role: Futures and Force Design leads strategic foresight, concepts, capability strategy and Warfare Development to drive future force adaptation, optimisation and combat effectiveness across the UK Armed Forces.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Engage across MSHQ, including key strategic cycles, to understand current insights, risks and problem statements, and identify Warfare Development opportunities.
  • Support governance of the Military Strategic Lessons ecosystem to ensure the timely processing and implementation of operationally relevant lessons, including responsibility for the lessons-related aspects of JSP 441.
  • Oversee Defence’s experimentation, wargaming, modelling and simulation ecosystem to deliver priority Warfare Development activity aligned to MSHQ direction.
  • Commission analysis on MSHQ-priority topics to generate strategic insights and lessons, presenting recommendations to the Integrated Warfare Board for validation and implementation.
  • Oversee Defence Doctrine reviews and provide prioritisation guidance to the Defence Doctrine team.
  • Develop Warfare Development priorities based on Defence risks, issues, lessons, insights and problem statements.
  • Deputise for the Assistant Head Strategic Warfare Development when required.
