A vacancy has arisen for a Sergeant (RAF PTI) to serve as Ground Training Instructor at RAF Cranwell on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 02 November 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status).

6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell, the school manages a broad range of flying tasks, from Elementary Flying training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation. The ASTRA project will instigate significant change for 6 FTS as it evolves to meet the 5 strategic pillars through the core themes of people and training.

EMUAS is one of the largest University Air Squadrons in the country. It achieves its aims through 4 key pillars of delivery: Flying, AT, Fitness and FD.

The EMUAS Ground Training Instructor (GTI) is responsible to OC EMUAS for implementing the Ground Training Syllabus (GTS) within the Sqn and to prepare students for attendance at Officer Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) and Modular Initial Officer Training (MIOT).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain a Safe System of Training during all training delivery, in accordance with JSP 375, AP 8000, AP 3342, and the 6 FTS Functional Safety Management Plan.
  • The delivery of Leadership and Personal Development Training using Command Tasks/Adventurous Training/Staff Rides etc to enhance group dynamics and problem solving.
  • Delivery of Training Objectives set out in the GTS, utilising a broad range of training mediums including but not limited to: classroom-based theoretical sessions, Sports, Command Tasks, Adventurous Personal Development Training (APDT) and Air Power Study Exercises (APSE).
  • Supervising the recording of Training Objectives achieved by all students as a means of gauging student performance.
  • Mentoring individuals through the GTS, highlighting any weaknesses to OC EMUAS.
  • Conducting and recording the results of the Bi-Annual Fitness Test and Swimming Tests as required. Remedial Training is to be delivered to all personnel who fail these tests.
  • When qualified, manage Defence Training Supervisor (DTS) duties for all Sqn Defence Trainers.
  • Conducting Synthetic Parachute Training (SPT) drills and other safety related training as required.
  • Responsible to OC EMUAS for the planning and delivery of Sqn Expeditions, ensuring an appropriate balance of Major and Minor expeditions commensurate with other commitments, both UK and overseas.
  • Responsible for promoting and facilitating individual applications for Joint Service and RAF sponsored AT courses.
  • Attend weekly term time Monday town nights at Town Head Quarters (THQ), located at the Army Reserve Centre (ARC), Beeston, Nottingham. Flexible working is essential to work regular weekends where required for AT & FD events, subject to requirements.
  • Maintenance and accounting of AT equipment, located at Force Head Quarters at RAFC Cranwell. Including the effective upkeep and appropriate use of all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with authorised training delivery.
