A vacancy has arisen for a Sqn Ldr (Medical Services – Accredited Consultant) to serve as the Flight Medical Officer within the RAF Air Cadets (RAFAC), RAF Cranwell, on Volunteer ex-Regular Reserve (90) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 03 August 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status).
Providing specialist aviation medicine advice, safety support and training assurance across RAFAC flying and gliding activity. The role requires a flexible commitment of an average of one to two days per week, supporting the safe and effective delivery of aviation experiences for cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), with the intention for the appointment to begin at the earliest opportunity.
Job Description: Reporting to Head of Aviation Policy, coordinated through SO1 Med and professionally accountable to the Chief Flight Medical Officer (CFMO), the RAFAC Flight Medical Officer will act as a specialist adviser on Flying Training Fitness (FTF) and wider aviation medicine matters. The postholder contributes to aviation safety, training governance, and the development of medical guidance across RAF Air Cadets. This appointment requires a fully registered medical practitioner and involves national-level coordination with internal and external Defence aviation medicine stakeholders.
Responsibilities: The role includes, although is not limited to:
- Provide expert medical advice on an RAF Air Cadet’s fitness to undertake military air experience and/or solo gliding/flying opportunities.
- Lead and support projects contributing to RAFAC aviation activity.
- Attend relevant meetings, briefings and conferences as required.
- Support and organise medical-related events.
- Maintain awareness of national legislation, MOD policy and RAFAC guidance relating to FTF.
- Ensure Medical Support resources on FTS SharePoint remain up to date and accessible.
- Conduct assurance visits to FTS activities when appropriate.
- Maintain personal governance qualifications and contribute to training assurance processes.
- Take prompt action on safeguarding concerns, maintaining DBS and safeguarding training currency.
- Liaise with MOD, RAF and Defence aviation medicine stakeholders to promote best practice.
- Work collaboratively within the RAFAC medical team and with permanent staff.
