Company Sergeant Major (CSM) – Light Infantry Reserve Unit

The CSM is responsible for maintaining discipline, standards, and operational effectiveness within a Light Infantry Reserve Unit. The CSM is a key figure in the chain of command, acting as the senior advisor to the Company Commander on all soldier-related matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Discipline and Standards:

    • Enforce military discipline and ensure adherence to the Army’s values and standards.
    • Act as a role model, demonstrating exemplary conduct, leadership, and professionalism.
    • Oversee the welfare, morale, and development of all soldiers within the Coy.
  2. Training and Administration:

    • Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of training activities, ensuring they meet operational requirements.
    • Monitor and report on individual and collective training standards.
    • Assist in the administration of personnel, including attendance, documentation, and career management.
  3. Leadership and Mentorship:

    • Provide leadership and guidance to junior NCOs, fostering their professional development.
    • Act as a mentor to soldiers, offering advice and support on personal and professional matters.
  4. Operational Readiness:

    • Ensure the company is prepared for operational deployments, including equipment checks and personnel readiness.
    • Support the Company Commander in the execution of orders and operational tasks.
  5. Liaison and Communication:

    • Act as a conduit between the Company Commander and soldiers, ensuring effective communication.
    • Liaise with other units, departments, and external agencies as required.

The CSM plays a pivotal role in maintaining the operational effectiveness and cohesion of the company, ensuring it is ready to meet the demands of both training and operational commitments.
