A vacancy has arisen for a Wing Commander (Any) to serve as SO1 Capability and Training within Aerospace Medicine Training Wing (AMTW) at the RAF Centre of Aerospace Medicine, RAF Henlow on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 01 September 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status).
SO1 Capability and Training is responsible to CO RAF CAM for leading and coordinating RAF CAM capability development and training, ensuring alignment with Defence tasks and future workforce requirements. The role oversees delivery of key capability projects, assures training quality and relevance, manages stakeholder engagement, and provides leadership of personnel to support effective and credible operational outputs.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead and coordinate all RAF CAM elements within the RAFMS Aerospace Medical Capability Programme, ensuring future capability requirements align with anticipated Defence tasks and inform AMTW training design, workforce development, and long-term training planning.
- Plan, execute and deliver the RAF CAM capability replacement project, ensuring delivery to time, cost and scope while maintaining alignment with wider organisational objectives.
- Assure AMTW course quality and delivery in accordance with DSAT standards, using capability insights to maintain operational relevance, accuracy, and credibility.
- Develop and implement forward-looking staff training and development strategies, including upskilling instructors to deliver emerging systems, technologies, and operational practices.
- Engage and collaborate with stakeholders across tactical, operational and strategic levels to gather and analyse requirements, ensuring outputs directly shape capability development, course content, delivery methods, and instructor competencies.
- Provide coaching, mentoring and application of Defence instructional techniques to enable instructors to adapt effectively to evolving training and capability demands.
- Oversee the organisation, governance and administration of high-profile courses (including the Diploma in Aviation Medicine), ensuring RAF CAM is fully equipped to deliver all course components successfully.
- Act as the primary interface between RAF CAM and RAFMS Capability, ensuring a coherent and integrated approach to capability planning and delivery.
- Exercise line management responsibility for PCO and C-CBRN staff, ensuring effective leadership, performance management and team development.
