The Role
We are seeking a seasoned Mechanical Project Manager with a strong background in Gas or Mechanical Engineering to lead a critical 9-month housing refurbishment and maintenance project for the MOD in Ipswich. You will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of mechanical packages, ensuring all works ranging from boiler replacements to full HVAC system upgrades are completed safely, on time, and in strict accordance with MOD compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Oversight: Manage the full lifecycle of mechanical installations and gas works within a residential MOD estate.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all works adhere to Gas Safe regulations, CDM 2015, and specific MOD JSP (Joint Service Publication) safety standards.
- Subcontractor Management: Lead on-site teams and specialist subcontractors, ensuring high quality of workmanship and adherence to the project timeline.
- Financial Control: Monitor project budgets, variations, and valuations to ensure the project remains commercially viable.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for the MOD, local authorities, and housing officers, providing regular progress reports and attending site meetings.
Candidate Requirements
- Background: Proven experience as a Project Manager with a trade background in Gas, Plumbing, or Heating/Ventilation.
- Security Clearance: Must hold (or be eligible to obtain) BPSS or SC Clearance.
- Qualifications: Gas Safe registration (Highly Desirable). SMSTS / SSSTS and CSCS Black/Gold Card. HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services (Preferred).
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of domestic/commercial gas systems, boiler plant rooms, and heating distribution.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, excellent communication, and the ability to navigate the unique administrative requirements of government-led projects.
Payment & Terms
- Payment Method: CIS (Construction Industry Scheme).
- Rate: £230 - £300 per day (negotiable based on experience).
- Working Hours: Typical site hours (08:00 - 17:00), Monday to Friday.
Note: Due to the nature of the site, a clean criminal record and a minimum of 5 years UK residency are typically required for security vetting purposes.
