The role will be based at our offices at 2-4 Cockspur Street, London, SW1Y 5BS, in central London. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Informal hybrid working arrangements apply and there is an expectation that staff will attend the office regularly. Work pattern and office attendance will be agreed with successful candidates.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigates and prosecutes the most serious and complex cases of fraud and bribery – cases that often involve millions of documents and huge volumes of digital evidence. Working under the Roskill model, we bring together multi-disciplinary teams of investigators, lawyers, accountants, and eDiscovery specialists to tackle high stakes cases. On average, an SFO investigation involves nearly five million documents, requiring large scale document reviews to identify key evidence and meet our legal disclosure obligations. To manage this review, the SFO uses a sophisticated eDiscovery platform equipped with AI-assisted review features. We are at the forefront of deploying this technology within the criminal justice system and have successfully used it in live cases. Expanding the use of the technology is a strategic priority outlined in our business plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and apply statistical methodologies to ensure the defensible and effective use of TAR in criminal investigations, ensuring it withstands scrutiny in court;
  • Develop policies and design processes to embed AI-driven document review across case teams, including delivery of comprehensive training;
  • Oversee data collection and analysis to assess TAR performance, ensuring adherence to best practices and quantifying its impact on investigations;
  • Collaborate with case teams and leadership to explore different applications of TAR and identify the most effective and impactful approaches.

Beyond TAR, this role offers the opportunity to explore and integrate further AI innovations, subject to capacity and the successful rollout of TAR. This could involve evaluating emerging AI tools that enhance investigative efficiency and improve case outcomes.

As the TAR Lead at the SFO, you will drive the integration of document review into complex criminal investigations. You’ll apply advanced analytics and predictive coding to streamline large scale reviews of material, ensuring they are defensible in court and deliver real investigative value. Working across multidisciplinary teams, you’ll design robust processes, lead training, assess performance and champion innovative uses of TAR. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of digital investigations in high profile criminal cases.

As a Technology Assisted Review Lead you will be responsible for:

  • Assess and develop TAR capabilities by identifying potential applications of AI-assisted reviews in criminal investigations and shape how it can be implemented across the organisation;
  • Create comprehensive guidance and best practice materials to support organisational adoption and ensure consistency in TAR usage;
  • Provide technical expertise and hands-on support to case teams, assisting with the setup and execution of TAR workflows;
  • Design and deliver tailored training programmes to upskill case teams;
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on TAR performance, providing senior management with data-driven insights on its impact and effectiveness.

Alongside your salary of £60,899, Serious Fraud Office contributes £17,642 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
