As a Sole Vessel Engineer, you will have overall responsibility for the operational state and maintenance of all machinery and electrical equipment on board the vessel. You’ll ensure safe and efficient operations, compliance with safety standards, and support the Master in achieving optimal performance and reliability.

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical appliances, domestic installations, fittings and structures.
  • Consult daily with the Master to achieve maximum economy and efficiency of machinery.
  • Keep the Master informed of any occurrences in the engine room that might affect navigation or essential services.
  • Assist the Master in ensuring compliance with Oil and Environmental Pollution Prevention Legislation.
  • Become familiar with vessel construction, machinery and operating characteristics.
  • Maintain overall control configuration of the vessel and all systems/equipment.
  • Keep accurate records of labour, fuel, lubricating oils and water consumption.
  • Ensure planned maintenance and emergency repairs are carried out with minimal disruption.
  • Supervise bunkering and arrange transfers of fuel, oil, ballast and water.
  • Prepare spare gear orders and maintain inventory lists and engine room stores.
  • Monitor and inspect machinery spaces regularly to ensure operational capability.
  • Ensure compliance with company Safety Management System, including Permit to Work and Tag Out systems.
  • Provide detailed handovers when joining or leaving a vessel.
  • Carry out any other duties reasonably requested by the Master or the company.
  • Assist in the planning of Dry Dock Specification including record of Hours on Machinery and match up to the OEM specification.
  • Highlight parts are ordered in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Technical Superintendent in getting the information on defects and works due in comprehensive jobs list to be imputed to the Docking Spec.

What You Will Need To Do The Role

  • MCA Certificate of Competence EOOW (as a minimum).
  • STCW certifications (Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Designated Security Duties, Elementary First Aid).
  • Unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate.
  • Methodical approach and good standard of education.
  • Ability to obtain Security Clearance.

Desirable

  • Ship’s Safety Officer Certificate.
  • Familiarity with Serco Management System (SMS), Integrated Management System (IMS), International Safety Management (ISM), International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP), and ISO standards.
