Location: HMP Doncaster, Doncaster

Salary: £26,436.80

Full Time Hours: Night duty OSO – full-time, 40 hrs, working a 7 on / 7 off rota basis.

The Role

As an Operational Support Officer, you will play a key role in maintaining the day-to-day operation of the prison. While this is not a Prison Officer role, it is operationally focused and based within a secure environment. Depending on the position, duties may include:

  • Managing entry and exit points to the prison, including gate operations
  • Controlling access for staff, visitors, contractors and vehicles
  • Supporting internal prison operations and movement control
  • Monitoring security systems and communications
  • Carrying out searches and security checks in line with procedures
  • Supporting night‑time operations where required
  • Completing accurate records and reports
  • Working closely with Prison Officers and other operational teams
  • Following strict security protocols at all times and contributing to a safe and professional working environment

Please note: some roles may require flexibility to attend mandatory training, including on non‑rostered days.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for reliable, professional individuals who can remain calm under pressure and follow procedures accurately. You don’t need previous prison experience, but you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong communication skills
  • A responsible and professional approach
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • Confidence working in a secure, regulated environment
  • Good attention to detail and record‑keeping
  • Flexibility is essential to work shifts, including nights and weekends where required

Additional Information

This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship under current UK Home Office rules, as it does not meet the required salary or skill level criteria. Candidates who already have a valid right to work in the UK through other immigration routes or permissions must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • Have at least two years remaining on your current visa to ensure sufficient time in the role.
  • Have lived in the UK for at least one year.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and all offers of employment are subject to security clearance checks, and satisfactory employment references. You will be required to provide five years of employment and education history as part of these checks, and obtain Ministry of Justice Enhanced Level 2 Clearance & Enhanced DBS with adult and child barring vetting clearances.
