Serco is recruiting a skilled Mechanical Technician / Heating Engineer to join the Facilities Management team at Forth Valley Hospital, Larbert. The successful candidate will carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs on heating systems, air handling units (AHUs), ventilation systems, and associated mechanical plant across a live hospital environment, ensuring compliance with Scottish Health Technical Memoranda (SHTM) and statutory regulations.
This is a vital role ensuring the safe, efficient operation of critical heating, ventilation, and mechanical infrastructure that supports clinical operations and patient care in a complex healthcare setting.
Main Accountabilities
- Maintenance of air handling units (AHUs) and ventilation systems.
- Conduct PPMs on boilers, pumps, valves, pipework, heating distribution systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Diagnose faults and carry out reactive repairs efficiently, minimising downtime.
- Ensure all works are compliant with SHTM 03-01, HTMs, and relevant NHS Estates guidance.
- Maintain detailed records of all work completed using CAFM systems and compliance logs.
- Support system performance monitoring and validation in critical clinical areas.
- Liaise with clinical teams, FM colleagues, and external contractors to ensure minimal disruption during maintenance tasks.
- Follow all relevant health & safety, infection control, and permit-to-work procedures.
- Participate in the on-call rota and work across a rotating shift pattern, as required.
What you will need to do this role
- Time-served HVAC or mechanical engineer with relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds).
- Experience working on heating systems, air handling units, and ventilation systems in hospital or critical environments.
- Strong understanding of SHTM 03-01 and mechanical heating and ventilation standards in healthcare.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Proficient in using CAFM systems and digital maintenance records.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
- SHTM / HTM awareness or formal training.
- Experience with BMS (Building Management Systems) and HVAC control systems.
- Awareness of infection prevention measures in healthcare.
- Additional training/certifications (e.g., SSSTS, PASMA, IPAF, L8 Awareness).
