Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver a national fleet strategy focused on service, asset utilisation, and cost efficiency.
- Drive innovation, sustainability, and lifecycle planning to future-proof operations.
- Collaborate with Transport and Planning GMs to align fleet capacity with business needs.
- Lead and develop a team including supervisors, administrators, and HGV technicians.
- Promote a high-performance, safety-first culture with clear accountability and growth pathways.
- Manage daily operations across workshops, mobile techs, and maintenance partners.
- Ensure fleet availability, minimise VOR times, and maintain robust maintenance schedules.
- Oversee O-Licence compliance, including PMI, defect resolution, and DVSA engagement.
- Support vehicle specification, sourcing, and procurement activities.
- Monitor contracts, warranties, SLAs, and supplier performance.
- Manage asset lifecycle from acquisition to disposal.
- Standardise processes across fleet functions and ensure accurate data flows.
- Maintain compliance with DVSA and internal audit standards through rigorous record-keeping.
- Leverage fleet data to drive decisions and continuous improvement.
- Implement dashboards and KPIs to monitor fuel, cost, maintenance, and utilisation.
- Report performance, risk, and strategy updates to the Head of Logistics.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Fleet Leadership & Sector Expertise
Senior leadership experience in logistics or heavy haulage, ideally within bulk, RO-RO, or waste-to-energy sectors.
Engineering background with hands-on experience in similar environments. - Fleet Management & Compliance
In-depth knowledge of HGV fleet operations, DVSA/O-Licence governance, and maintenance systems.
Proven ability to manage multi-site transport structures and ensure compliance across locations. - Procurement & Supplier Relations
Strong track record in negotiating fleet and workshop service contracts and managing supplier performance. - Team & Partner Management
Skilled in leading technical teams, administrators, and remote service partners with a process-driven approach. - Systems & Reporting Proficiency
Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with TMS/FMS platforms (e.g., Mandata, Freeway, Convey). - Certifications
Holder of National/International CPC.
- NEBOSH or IOSH qualification
- Experience with ESG or low-carbon fleet strategy (e.g. HVO, CNG, EV transition)
