Serany (serany.app) is a new SaaS product for independent funeral directors. It gives a funeral director a way of creating funeral websites for their families.

How it works:

  • The family or funeral director enters all of the information about the funeral
  • They share the link with family and friends
  • Watch as people RSVP, donate and leave memories

Serany was built after I (Tristan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tristancclark/) went through my grandparents' funerals and felt like we must be able to do a better job. There were no tools available to help us plan, organise and invite people to the funeral. The funeral itself felt templated and impersonal.

The product launched 3 months ago, and so far we have onboarded 6 funeral directors and had some really great feedback. I have over 8 years of experience working in tech and leading large technical and product teams. I built the product myself. So far, I have been the one selling it and have had quite a lot of success; people are very receptive to the concept and product, and I have been able to book demos fairly easily.

I am now looking for someone to take over from me in calling the funeral homes across the UK, introducing Serany and booking a 30-minute demo in my calendar.

I imagine that this role could develop into giving the demos as well but to start with, it is just organising them.

What the work actually is

  • Calling independent funeral homes from a list I prepare
  • Understanding what each particular funeral director does today, and why Serany is an improvement for them
  • Explaining in a couple of sentences what Serany is to them
  • Politely figuring out who the decision maker is at the firm and trying to get time in their calendar for a demo
  • Logging exactly what happened on each call, including the nos and the reason
  • Telling me what you keep hearing, so I can change the pitch or the product
  • Working closely with me to understand the market and the product well

Where it goes

  • How it starts: you book the calls, I run the demos
  • Then: we develop our relationship and you start to sit in on the demos
  • Then: you start to own the entire sales pipeline; we may even introduce commission-based pay depending on performance

Who this suits

  • You are interested in the tech industry and want to get stuck in an early-stage start-up
  • You are fairly tech-savvy and can understand the product well
  • You live and work in the UK. Most of these firms are family-run businesses in small towns, and the call goes better when it does not sound like a call centre
  • You are comfortable on the phone with people who did not ask you to call. Not pushy, not scripted. Funeral directors are busy, careful about their reputation, and short on money
  • You can talk about a sensitive trade without being awkward about it or falsely sombre. You are kind and emotionally intelligent.
  • You are reliable and a good communicator.
  • Outbound sales, SDR work, charity fundraising, recruitment or front-of-house experience are all useful here. If you have none of them and the points above are true of you, apply anyway.

Practical

  • 4 to 6 hours a week to start, in UK office hours, very flexible on timings
  • Fully remote. You need somewhere quiet to call from and a decent connection
  • Β£18-30 an hour, flat. Depending on experience. No commission and nothing to chase
  • Self-employed, invoiced monthly, on a short written agreement
  • I generate the call list, you do some research on each funeral director before calling
  • The first 10 hours are a paid trial, for both of us
