Part-Time Remote

I created Serany (serany.app) after going through my own grandparents' funerals and feeling like we must be able to do a better job. It was completely overwhelming trying to organise a funeral whilst also grieving. There were no tools available to help us plan, organise and invite people to the funeral, and the funeral itself felt templated and impersonal.

Serany aims to make this time a little bit easier for families by providing tools for sharing funeral details, collecting RSVPs and allowing family and friends to contribute to a send-off befitting their loved one.

We get the product to families by partnering with funeral directors and giving them a way of creating these funeral websites for the families they look after.

How it works:

  • The family or funeral director enters all of the information about the funeral
  • They share the link with family and friends
  • Watch as people RSVP, donate and leave memories

Serany is only 5 months old and is already being used by 5 funeral directors. We have proven that there is a real gap here and now have the opportunity to scale up and help thousands of families.

About Tristan

I've spent over seven years in tech leading engineering and product teams. In my last role, I went from a founding engineer to Director of Engineering, and saw the company grow from 4 people to 50. I left to build something of my own.

I live in the UK by the coast. I'm well travelled, outgoing, friendly, outdoorsy and (hopefully) fun to work with and learn from.

I built Serany myself and, until now, have done all the selling too. It's gone better than I expected. Funeral directors are generally receptive to the idea, and getting demos booked in hasn't been particularly difficult.

About the role

What you will be doing

Initially, you will be doing sales. That means:

  • Calling funeral directors from a list that we curate together, and getting a demo booked in with me
  • Building a relationship with the funeral director, figuring out who the decision-maker is and getting time with them
  • Understanding how they work today and how Serany can improve their service
  • Keeping a record of every call: whom you spoke to, their stance on Serany, how to follow up
  • Reflecting on the calls with me, so we can keep improving the pitch and the product

Where I would like this to go

  • This is a small part-time role to start with, but if the person is right, I would like it to develop into something bigger
  • If the calling goes well, I'd like you to start running the demos, and then owning the whole sales process
  • Ideally, I'd also want your input and contributions on marketing and brand
  • This is a start-up, so I can never be sure how things evolve over time, but prove yourself and there are much bigger opportunities for ownership

Who this will suit

  • You are looking for some tech start-up experience and are hungry to learn
  • You're comfortable picking up the phone and talking to people you haven't met. You don't need to be a pushy salesperson, but you do need to be happy starting conversations
  • You're comfortable talking to people in the funeral profession. It's a sensitive industry, but there is no need to be overly formal or sombre. Just be a normal, friendly and considerate person
  • You live and work in the UK. Most of these firms are family businesses in small towns, and the call goes a lot better when it doesn't sound like a call centre
  • You are happy to work part-time
  • You are keen to get your hands dirty and never say "that is not my job"
  • You don't just want to be told what to do. You take initiative and come up with ideas and strategies yourself
  • You understand what Serany is trying to do and want to be part of building it

You don't need sales experience. Outbound sales, charity fundraising, recruitment, hospitality or front-of-house all help, but if you have none of them and the points above are true of you, apply anyway. I care more about the person than their experience.

Practicalities

  • Hours: 4–6 hours a week to start with
  • When: Within UK office hours, but very flexible on exactly when
  • Where: Fully remote. You'll need somewhere quiet to make calls and a decent internet connection
  • Commission: None to start with. Just a straightforward hourly rate
  • Contract: Self-employed, invoiced monthly, with a short written agreement
  • Trial: The first 10 hours are paid. It's a chance for both of us to see if it's a good fit
