About the Company
Our client is an established international manufacturer of high-quality flooring solutions for commercial and residential environments. Its extensive product portfolio includes linoleum, vinyl flooring, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), entrance flooring systems, carpet tiles and specialist textile flooring.
Operating across multiple international manufacturing sites, the business is committed to manufacturing excellence, sustainability, safety and continuous improvement.
With ongoing investment in its manufacturing facilities and production capabilities, the company offers an opportunity to join a well-established engineering team within a technically diverse industrial environment.
The Opportunity
Our client is looking to recruit a Project Engineer to join its engineering team at its manufacturing site in Derbyshire.
This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically or electrically qualified engineer with a background in manufacturing or continuous process environments to take ownership of a varied portfolio of capital investment and improvement projects.
Working closely with the Engineering Manager and the wider engineering team, you will manage projects from initial concept and design through to installation, commissioning and final handover. The projects will range from smaller site improvements to significant capital investments, with individual projects potentially reaching several million pounds.
The site operates a varied mix of machinery, from established equipment that has been in service for decades to modern automated systems and robotics. This creates an interesting and technically diverse environment for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, improving equipment and delivering practical engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Capital Project Delivery: Manage engineering and capital investment projects from concept, feasibility and design through to procurement, installation, commissioning and handover.
- Project Planning: Develop project plans, schedules, budgets and resource requirements to ensure successful delivery against agreed objectives.
- Budget Management: Monitor project expenditure, manage costs and evaluate return on investment (ROI) to ensure capital is used effectively.
- Procurement and Contractors: Specify equipment, liaise with suppliers, obtain quotations and coordinate contractors throughout project delivery.
- Installation and Commissioning: Oversee equipment installations, modifications and commissioning activities, ensuring projects are completed safely and to the required standards.
- Manufacturing Improvements: Identify and implement opportunities to improve production capacity, equipment reliability, operational efficiency and overall manufacturing performance.
- Site Infrastructure and Utilities: Support projects involving site services, infrastructure and utilities, including improvements to existing facilities.
- Health and Safety: Ensure projects comply with relevant health and safety legislation, site procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Stakeholder Management: Work collaboratively with production, maintenance, engineering, suppliers and external contractors to coordinate project activities.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to modernise equipment, improve processes and deliver measurable operational benefits.
- Project Documentation: Maintain accurate project records, technical documentation, commissioning information and handover packs.
About You
You will be a practical, proactive engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects and seeing them through to successful completion. You will be comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with a combination of older machinery and modern automated equipment.
You will also be able to balance the demands of smaller improvement projects with the planning and coordination required for larger capital investments.
Essential Requirements
- A recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
- At least five years' experience in an automated or semi-automated manufacturing environment, ideally involving continuous process operations.
- Demonstrable experience managing capital investment or engineering projects.
- Experience working with manufacturing machinery, site infrastructure and utilities.
- A good understanding of health and safety requirements within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Competence in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
- Strong planning, organisational and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
- A proactive, self-motivated approach with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in project engineering, manufacturing engineering, capital projects or maintenance and projects.
- Experience within flooring, chemicals, building products, FMCG, food manufacturing, packaging or other process-driven industries.
- Experience delivering equipment installations, production line upgrades or automation projects.
- Experience managing projects with budgets ranging from smaller site improvements to investments of £1 million or more.
- Familiarity with machinery upgrades, rollers, industrial ovens, robotics or other production equipment.
- Experience assessing project costs, financial benefits and return on investment.
The Engineering Team
You will report directly to the Engineering Manager and join a small, collaborative projects team of three people, including the successful candidate.
The wider engineering function includes nine shift engineers and two MRO staff, providing support across site maintenance, reliability and engineering operations.
This structure offers the opportunity to work closely with key engineering decision-makers while taking responsibility for a diverse range of projects.
