Junior Technical Assistant - BMS / Energy Management
Location: Colchester
Salary: £30,000-£35,000 + Pension | Private Medical | 25 days Holidays | Training & Overtime
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
I'm recruiting for a Regional Technical Assistant to join an established building controls business, supporting Regional Technical Managers with BMS upgrades, energy optimisation and smart building projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate or early-career engineer looking to build a career in Building Management Systems (BMS), HVAC controls and energy management. You'll receive full training and mentoring, gaining hands‑on experience across site surveys, technical solutions and energy efficiency projects.
The Role
Working alongside experienced engineers and technical managers, you'll help assess existing building control systems, identify opportunities for improvement and support the development of technical solutions that improve building performance, reduce energy consumption and lower carbon emissions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with site surveys of existing BMS, HVAC and building control systems.
- Reviewing control systems, equipment and building performance to identify faults, inefficiencies and upgrade opportunities.
- Supporting the development of BMS upgrades, retrofit solutions and energy optimisation projects.
- Helping prepare technical reports, control strategies, system specifications and scopes of work.
- Identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort and system reliability.
- Supporting senior engineers during customer meetings and technical discussions.
- Developing knowledge of smart building technologies, energy monitoring and HVAC controls.
- Ensuring site activities and technical documentation meet quality and health and safety standards.
What I'm Looking For
- A degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Building Services, Controls or Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
- A genuine interest in BMS, HVAC controls, energy management and smart building technology.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with an eagerness to learn.
- Good communication, organisation and IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- An interest in developing both technical engineering and customer‑facing skills.
- Access to a car for travel to the office and customer sites.
- A full UK driving licence, or willingness to obtain one.
Any previous exposure to HVAC systems, electrical controls, energy efficiency or AutoCAD would be advantageous, but full training will be provided.
