The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for performing competent nursing care based on the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, care coordination, teaching, and health promotion and evaluation. The RN demonstrates professional standards of practice and performance, including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health. Clinical knowledge and skills must meet the standards required by specific clinical areas. A BSN or MSN degree is preferred.
Specific certifications and requirements vary by specialty:
- Critical Care/IMCU: ACLS within 1 year
- Emergency Care: ACLS & PALS or ENPC within 1 year
- Oncology Care: ONS/ONCC or Sentara approved chemotherapy and biotherapy course within 6 months
- Womenβs Care (Perinatal): NRP within 6 months
- Peds: PALS within 6 months
- All direct care RNs must have BLS within 90 days
