Are you a finance professional with a keen eye for detail and a passion for making a difference? Would you like to use your financial skills to support an international charity working to improve the lives of people with deaf-blindness around the world?

We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Management Accountant to join our Sense International Finance Team, supporting the financial management and reporting of our international programmes.

This is a permanent, full-time role working 37.5 hours per week, with a salary of £31,103 per annum. The role offers hybrid working, with two days per week based at our TouchBase Pears office in Selly Oak, Birmingham, and the remaining days working from home. Occasional travel to our London office and international travel may also be required.

As an Assistant Management Accountant, you'll work closely with the Head of Finance and wider Finance Team to support the delivery of accurate, timely financial information across Sense International.

You'll play an important role in preparing monthly management accounts, maintaining financial records and reconciliations, supporting budgeting and forecasting activities and monitoring income and expenditure across our international operations.

Working alongside colleagues in the UK and overseas, you'll help ensure financial information is accurate, financial controls are maintained and donor funding is managed in line with organisational policies and requirements.

You'll also provide financial information and analysis to budget holders, support year-end accounts and audit activities and contribute to improvements in financial systems and processes.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts, financial reports and variance analysis
  • Maintaining accurate financial records, balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls
  • Preparing and posting journals, including foreign currency transactions, and completing bank reconciliations
  • Supporting annual budgets, financial forecasts and cash flow reporting
  • Monitoring income and expenditure against agreed budgets and highlighting significant variances
  • Assisting with financial reporting for donors, funders and grant-making organisations
  • Supporting the monitoring of restricted and unrestricted funding to ensure compliance with donor requirements
  • Working with international finance colleagues to support accurate financial reporting and overseas financial operations
  • Providing financial information and analysis to budget holders and helping colleagues understand financial reports
  • Supporting the preparation of statutory accounts, year-end financial statements and audit documentation
  • Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, systems and reporting

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is analytical, organised and confident working with financial information, with the ability to build positive working relationships across a diverse international organisation.

You'll need

  • Previous experience working in a finance role, including supporting management accounts, reconciliations or month-end reporting
  • A strong understanding of balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls
  • Experience of financial analysis and providing support to budget holders
  • Experience of preparing financial information or schedules to support year-end accounts and audit activities
  • Awareness of relevant charity accounting requirements, with the ability to develop your knowledge of Charity SORP and FRS 102
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills
  • Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • The ability to communicate financial information clearly to colleagues without a finance background
  • Confidence building effective working relationships with colleagues in the UK and internationally
  • A commitment to the values and mission of Sense International
  • Experience within the charity, not-for-profit or international development sector would be an advantage, but isn't essential.
  • It would also be beneficial if you're part-qualified, qualified or currently studying towards a relevant accountancy qualification, or have experience of donor, grant and restricted fund reporting, international finance operations, foreign currency transactions or finance systems implementation and improvement.
  • An understanding of governance, risk management and charity regulation would also be desirable.
