We are looking for an enthusiastic and active Teacher to work with pupils with SEND needs in Workington. This is a little different from a traditional classroom teaching role. You’ll be using practical experiences to build engagement, confidence, resilience and positive relationships alongside their learning. It could be a great opportunity for a teacher who enjoys finding creative ways to engage young people who may not always thrive in a conventional classroom environment.
The Role
- Plan and deliver engaging outdoor and practical learning sessions
- Adapt activities around pupils’ individual SEND needs, interests and abilities
- Help young people develop confidence, independence, resilience and teamwork
- Build positive and consistent relationships with pupils who may have experienced barriers to education
- Use a calm and flexible approach to support pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour
- Encourage pupils to take part, try new experiences and recognise their own progress
- Maintain appropriate safeguarding, risk assessment and health and safety procedures during activities
- Work closely with support staff and the wider school team to ensure pupils receive consistent support
Who We're Looking For
- Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or has relevant teaching experience
- Is confident working with KS3 and KS4 pupils
- Has experience with SEMH, SEND, alternative provision or pupils who find mainstream education challenging
- Enjoys outdoor learning, physical activity and practical education
- Can think creatively about how to engage pupils outside a traditional classroom setting
- Has strong behaviour management skills while remaining calm, patient and approachable
- Is comfortable adapting plans when pupils need a different approach
- Understands that building trust and relationships can be just as important as the activity itself
The Setting
The setting is a learning centre that supports young people with SEND needs. Pupils benefit from a more personalised and practical approach to education, with staff focusing on relationships, engagement and helping each young person make meaningful progress.
Working Hours and Details
- Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm
- Term time only
- Location - Workington
- Role Type: Full Time / Part time/ Temp to Perm
- Pay Rate: £160 - £250 per day

As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
