Are you a mainstream teacher considering a move into SEN or SEMH education?

Luma Education Recruitment is currently recruiting for a SEMH Teacher to join an impressive specialist education setting in Newton Abbot, Devon.

This is a great opportunity for a qualified teacher who enjoys teaching but is looking for a more personalised approach, smaller class sizes and a supportive environment where you can focus on the individual needs of your pupils.

You don't need extensive SEMH experience to be considered. Full training and support will be provided, making this an excellent opportunity for a mainstream teacher looking to take the next step into specialist education.

With opportunities available to start within the coming weeks, site visits are currently being arranged for suitable candidates.

About The Role

You’ll work with small groups of pupils who may have social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them re-engage with education and develop the confidence and skills they need to progress.

The Role Will Involve

  • Planning and delivering engaging lessons across the curriculum
  • Working with small class sizes and providing a more personalised approach to teaching
  • Adapting lessons to meet individual learning needs
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH, SEND, behavioural and additional needs
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment
  • Managing behaviour positively and consistently
  • Monitoring progress and contributing to individual learning plans
  • Working closely with Teaching Assistants and the wider specialist team
  • Supporting pupils to develop confidence, independence and readiness for their next steps

A Different Approach to Teaching

If you're finding mainstream teaching increasingly difficult to balance with workload, large classes and the demands that come with the role, this could offer a refreshing change.

You'll still have the opportunity to teach and use your existing skills, but within a setting where:

  • Classes are smaller
  • Learning is more personalised
  • Pupils receive greater individual support
  • There is time within the school day for planning and preparation
  • Training and development are provided
  • You work alongside an experienced specialist team
  • The focus is on progress, relationships and individual outcomes

This could be an ideal stepping stone for a mainstream teacher wanting to move into SEN, SEMH or specialist education without needing to have specialist experience already.

What's on Offer?

  • £150-£240 per day, depending on experience
  • Full-time, Monday-Friday during school hours
  • Temp-to-perm opportunities available
  • Training provided for teachers moving into SEMH
  • Small class sizes
  • Dedicated time during the school day for planning and preparation
  • Supportive specialist education environment
  • Opportunity to develop valuable SEN and SEMH experience
  • Impressive and highly regarded school
  • Free on-site parking
  • Desirable Newton Abbot location

Who We're Looking For

We're keen to hear from QTS-qualified teachers from a range of backgrounds, particularly those currently working in mainstream education who are considering a move into specialist teaching.

You could be an experienced teacher looking for a change, or a teacher who has always been interested in SEN/SEMH but hasn't yet had the opportunity to work in the sector.

You'll Ideally Be

  • QTS qualified
  • Passionate about teaching and supporting young people
  • Patient, adaptable and resilient
  • Confident managing behaviour positively
  • Interested in developing your SEMH and SEND experience
  • Able to build strong relationships with pupils
  • Open to learning new approaches and working as part of a specialist team
