Humanities Teacher - Therapeutic SEMH School

Oakham, Rutland

Start: ASAP

Full-time, ongoing

Temp to perm

Are you a passionate Humanities Teacher looking for a role where you can make a genuine difference to young people who have struggled to engage with education?

SEND Inclusion Support is working with one of our fantastic partner schools in Oakham to recruit a Humanities Teacher to join their specialist, therapeutic setting for young people with SEMH needs.

The existing teacher will be leaving shortly, so the school is looking for someone who can start as soon as possible and provide continuity for pupils.

Importantly, there is also a permanent position available following the initial appointment, making this a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a permanent role.

You will teach Humanities within a therapeutic environment where relationships are at the heart of education.

You will be expected to:

  • Plan and deliver engaging Humanities lessons
  • Adapt learning to meet a range of SEMH and educational needs
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Support pupils who may have experienced significant barriers to education
  • Create a calm, structured and predictable learning environment
  • Encourage engagement, confidence and a sense of achievement
  • Work closely with support staff and the wider therapeutic team
  • Adapt your teaching approach around individual pupils
  • Maintain high expectations while recognising individual starting points
  • Has QTS or a recognised teaching qualification
  • Has experience teaching Humanities
  • Has a strong understanding of SEMH
  • Is patient, calm and consistent
  • Can build meaningful relationships with young people
  • Is confident adapting lessons and expectations
  • Understands that behaviour is often a form of communication
  • Wants to make a genuine difference rather than simply deliver a curriculum

Experience within an SEMH, specialist or alternative provision setting would be highly desirable, although experienced mainstream teachers with a strong interest in SEND and SEMH are encouraged to apply.

This is a therapeutic school, not a traditional classroom environment.

The staff team take a relationship-led approach and understand that pupils need to feel safe, understood and valued before they can fully engage with learning.

You’ll be joining a supportive team where your teaching can have a real impact - and with a permanent position potentially available, there is the opportunity to build something long term.

SEND Inclusion Support is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment and safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check, right to work verification, references and any other checks relevant to the role and setting.
