We are working with an independent, specialist SEN day school that provides a highly personalised learning environment for children and young people aged 6 to 19 with a wide range of complex needs. These include Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD/SLD), Autism, ADHD, and associated needs.

The role is for an experienced SENCo based in Meldreth, near Royston (Cambridgeshire / Hertfordshire border).

  • Contract Type: Full-time, Temp - Perm
  • Salary: £150 - £200 per day (depending on experience)
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Start: April 2026

The school supports pupils with medical needs alongside sensory and physical impairments, taking a holistic, child-centred approach to help manage sensory overload, anxiety, low confidence, and transitions which can present through behaviour. The school provides excellent facilities, including specialist therapy spaces, a hydrotherapy pool, and extensive outdoor learning areas. An on-site therapeutic team works with teaching staff to deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of every learner. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced SENCo to join the school from April 2026.

The role

As SENCo, you will work closely with the Head of School and senior leadership team to develop and lead inclusive teaching and learning across the school. You will have oversight of SEND provision, curriculum development, assessment, careers and preparation for adulthood, and enrichment across designated phases. You will support the strategic development of the school in line with its values and quality improvement plans, while leading the effective implementation and day-to-day management of SEND policies. A core focus will be on improving outcomes and achievement for pupils with SEND.

Key responsibilities
  • Support the day-to-day leadership and management of the school community, including staff recruitment, training, and line management
  • Lead and coordinate CPD for classroom-based staff, ensuring training needs are identified and met
  • Support the effective management of budgets and resources to meet school priorities and targets
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and well-maintained learning environment through effective health and safety practice
  • Collate evidence for key sections of the school's self-evaluation processes
  • Report to governance on pupil progress, learning outcomes, and school improvement plans
  • Play a leading role in assessment, achievement reviews, and target-setting processes
  • Ensure robust systems are in place for collecting and analysing assessment data to inform planning and raise achievement
  • Monitor the quality of teaching and learning through planning scrutiny, work sampling, lesson observations, and reporting outcomes
  • Lead the development and implementation of an inclusive curriculum and effective assessment framework
Essential skills and qualifications
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS or QTLS)
  • Strong track record of high-quality teaching within SEN or specialist settings
  • Experience translating SEND policy into effective, practical implementation
  • Leadership experience within inclusion, SEND, or a key phase, with impact on whole-school outcomes
  • Strong people management skills and experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication skills across a range of audiences and formats
Desirable skills and qualifications
  • Accredited training in specialist areas such as Autism or Dyslexia etc.
  • A management or leadership qualification
  • NPQSL, NPQH, NPQSENDCo (or willingness to achieve within two years)
  • Experience delivering impactful CPD, mentoring, and coaching
  • Contribution to senior leadership teams and strategic planning
  • Understanding of ASD interventions such as TEACCH or similar approaches
  • Experience in curriculum leadership, action planning, and resource management
