A specialist SEN school in Newton Heath is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Support Assistant to join their supportive team from September. This is a full-time, long-term opportunity until the end of the academic year, supporting pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs within a specialist education setting. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting pupils with additional needs, working closely with class teachers and the wider SEN team to provide personalised academic, social, emotional, and pastoral support. The school provides a structured, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every pupil is encouraged to develop confidence, independence, and achieve their individual potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with a range of SEN needs
- Supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), complex needs, communication difficulties, and learning disabilities
- Assisting pupils to access learning activities and engage positively within the classroom
- Supporting emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social development
- Assisting with the implementation of EHCPs, individual support plans, and behaviour strategies
- Using communication approaches such as Makaton, PECS, AAC, or other specialist strategies where required
- Supporting pupils' independence, confidence, and engagement throughout the school day
- Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and support staff

The Successful Applicant Will
- Have experience supporting children or young people with SEN
- Be confident working with pupils with a range of additional needs
- Be calm, patient, resilient, and proactive, with a nurturing approach
- Have excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Be confident supporting behaviour and emotional regulation
- Have the right to work in the UK and full-time availability from September
- Makaton, PECS, AAC, or other communication training (desirable)
- Team Teach, MAPA, or similar de-escalation training (desirable)
- Hold a valid Enhanced DBS Certificate (Child and Adult Workforce) registered on the DBS Update Service (essential)
