Forest School Teaching Assistant – Frome, Somerset

Forest School Teaching Assistant - Frome (BA11)

Location: Frome, Somerset (outdoor sites on the edge of town)

Hours: 8:30am - 4pm, plus 40-60 minutes of session report writing

Contract: Temporary supply, day-to-day

Essential: Comfortable working outdoors all day in all weathers

Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting a Forest School Teaching Assistant for supply days at two outdoor learning settings in Frome, Somerset. Sessions run from 9:30am to 3pm in woodland and growing spaces, and your day also covers setting up, packing down and a short team evaluation. Some days may be split, with a morning at one setting and an afternoon at the other.

About the Settings

Both are small, community‑run outdoor learning providers on the outskirts of Frome. They run forest school and nature‑based sessions for children and young people, using games, practical tasks and outdoor challenges to build confidence, social skills and emotional literacy. The two teams work side by side and share supply staff.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Supporting child‑led forest school sessions, following the children's interests rather than a fixed lesson plan
  • Setting up the site before sessions and packing equipment away afterwards
  • Helping with activities such as den building, tool use, fire‑side work and nature exploration, under the lead practitioner's direction
  • Keeping children safe outdoors and following each setting's risk assessments
  • Joining the end‑of‑day evaluation and writing up session reports (40-60 minutes)

What You'll Need

  • Experience as a Teaching Assistant, forest school assistant or in outdoor education with children
  • Confidence supporting a child‑led approach
  • Happy to spend the full day outside, with suitable outdoor clothing and footwear
  • Clear, concise written records for session reports
  • Availability on some or all of the dates above
  • Forest School Level 1-3 or an outdoor first aid certificate is useful but not essential

You'll be patient, observant and calm, and happy to let children take the lead. Before any booking you'll meet the team, and may spend a paid session with them, so both sides can check the fit.

Luma Education Recruitment is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All candidates will go through safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS and reference checks.

Luma Education Recruitment is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
