SEN Teaching Assistant Preverbal Autism Support (Hackney)
Full-time Long-term Immediate start
We’re looking for passionate and reliable SEN Teaching Assistants to join a specialist provision in Hackney supporting preverbal children with Autism (ASD) in a 1:2 model classroom. You’ll be part of a dedicated team helping children develop communication independence and social skills through structured routines, sensory activities and visual supports.
Responsibilities
- Supporting non‑verbal pupils 1:1 and 1:2 in a structured ASD setting
- Using PECS, Makaton or visual aids to support understanding
- Helping pupils engage in sensory and play‑based learning
- Working closely with teachers and therapists to track progress
- Maintaining calm consistency and clear boundaries throughout the day
What we’re looking for
- Experience working with Autism, preferably preverbal or early years SEN
- Calm, patient and proactive attitudeAbility to follow structured routines and use initiative
- Reliability and commitment – the children need consistency
- Enhanced DBS (we can help with this if needed)

Required Education
Postgraduate qualification or accredited training in SEND (e.g. National Award for SEN, Coordination, Autism Education Trust, dyslexia/SpLD or SEMH specialism). Proficiency in alternative/augmentative communication methods, Makaton, PECS, AAC using evidence‑based interventions such as TEACCH, SCERTS or Positive Behaviour in Team‑Teach, MAPA or similar de‑escalation and safe‑handling with assistive ed‑tech tools and adaptive software.
