Purpose of Role: Lead the continuous development of Environment, Health and Safety management systems and culture that meet regulatory requirements, drive everyday adoption of safe working practices by all stakeholders and are relevant to the activities of the business. Input to and oversee the implementation of the company’s Health & Safety strategy and the Environmental strategy in line with ISO14001. Develop, review, update and drive the annual improvement plan to align with the Thermal strategic business plan, improve risk management and company performance, and strengthen employee engagement and wellbeing. Be the company’s EH&S subject matter expert and key contact for Senior Group Health, Safety and Environment ensuring local strategy and activities are aligned with Group expectations, sharing best practice across Senior Group sites. Provide line management, leadership and development for the EH&S Officer, role modelling our Values and Behaviours.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, update and implement the EH&S strategy and annual objectives in support of the business plan.
- Provide oversight, prioritisation and reporting on progress, risks and performance to the General Manager and Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Develop, maintain and communicate EH&S performance metrics to report on progress and trend analysis.
- Provide weekly plant updates for the General Manager.
- Attend monthly Health & Safety meetings led by the EH&S Officer, as a Senior stakeholder.
- Liaise with all external agencies and bodies, including enforcing authorities, insurance companies and trade organisations.
- Provide advice and guidance on statutory compliance issues and keep up to date with forthcoming and proposed legislation changes to ensure the Company remains compliant with all relevant legislation.
- Proactively improve, develop, promote and implement the company EH&S management policies, procedures and systems, engaging all colleagues and third parties to build a strong safety culture and shared ownership.
- Support teams to submit observations and follow company procedures for accident and near miss reporting.
- Conduct investigations, provide regular feedback and implement continuous improvement and corrective actions to maintain a safe working environment for all.
- Develop, review, update and complete risk assessments, coaching people managers to be competent in managing risks in their respective teams.
- Ensure all assessments are carried out and kept up to date.
- Identify, conduct or arrange colleague training to ensure legal and procedural compliance.
- In line with EH&S system requirements, conduct regular monitoring, workplace inspections, safety tours and internal & external system audits.
- Develop action plans that address the key findings and follow up to ensure they are completed by the assigned owners.
- Ensure all statutory inspections and examinations are carried out on time and in accordance with the required standards and codes of practice.
- Maintain records for all statutory inspections, licenses and consents.
- Provide leadership to the EH&S Officer including setting objectives, coaching and development, resource planning, and driving a positive, inclusive and engaged team culture.
- Collaborate with Operations, Quality and Engineering colleagues to complete project work and ensure safe systems of work and regulatory compliance are applied at the scoping and design stage.
- Review and maintain the Business Continuity Plans including all emergency arrangements related to fire, first aid and chemical spill situations.
- Work in line with the Company Values (Safety, Accountability, Respect & Trust, Integrity, Excellence, Customer Focus) and demonstrate the associated behaviours in your daily work.
Qualifications Key Requirements:
- Good all-round knowledge of Environmental, Health & Safety legislation, including the ability to read and interpret Acts of Parliament, Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance notes.
- Experience of working within an Environmental, Health and Safety role in a manufacturing environment.
- Day-to-day management of risk assessments and their application in a manufacturing environment to drive a Safety-first culture.
- Working knowledge of Environment, Health & Safety standards such as ISO14001, their implementation and retention through successful audits.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence and ability to present to different stakeholder groups e.g. colleagues, leadership, customers, external agencies.
- Resource management experience including budget and cost management and identifying efficiencies.
- Organisation skills with the ability to prioritise and make data driven decisions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to influence and engage others when needed, to promote action and implement lasting change.
- Results focused with excellent attention to detail.
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
- Experience of working within an Environmental, Health and Safety role in a manufacturing environment in the Aerospace sector.
- Experience of Nadcap processes: Heat Treatment, Chemical Processing, Welding, NDT, and Non-Conventional Machining and their EH&S requirements.
- NEBOSH Diploma.
- Knowledge of solvent regulations and associated extraction requirements.
