SEN Tutor – Thatcham
Salary: GBP30–GBP90 per hour + Paid to scale or above
Are you an experienced SEN Tutor looking for a rewarding opportunity in Thatcham? We are seeking a dedicated SEN Tutor to support a learner currently receiving inpatient care within a secure hospital setting in Thatcham.
This role offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference by helping a young person reconnect with education, develop confidence, and work towards long‑term goals. You will provide personalised, face‑to‑face tuition within the hospital environment, initially focusing on core subjects while supporting wider educational development.
Position: Immediate start, approximately 10 hours per week, session times to be agreed.
About the Learner
The learner is highly motivated to re‑engage with education and aims to work towards GCSE qualifications, particularly in Maths and English.
Presentations:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
- Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)
- Pending ADHD assessment
- Previous challenges related to substance misuse

The SEN Tutor Role
- Deliver engaging one‑to‑one tuition tailored to the learner’s individual needs
- Support progression towards GCSE Maths and English
- Adapt lessons to meet complex SEMH and neurodiverse learning needs
- Build positive relationships encouraging engagement and achievement
- Work closely with hospital staff and multidisciplinary professionals
- Follow all safeguarding, security, and hospital procedures
- Support the learner’s academic, social, and personal development
The successful SEN Tutor will deliver learning directly within the hospital setting in Thatcham and will receive support and guidance regarding site‑specific procedures and safeguarding requirements.
Essential Requirements
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs
- Experience working with Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Ability to confidently adapt learning to a range of abilities
- Demonstrates patience, resilience, and empathy
- Comfortable working within a secure hospital environment
- Willing to undertake relevant training provided by hospital staff
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching/tutoring experience
- GCSE Maths and English teaching experience
- Experience in Alternative Provision, Hospital School, CAMHS, or Secure Setting
- Trauma‑informed practice
- Experience supporting learners with complex mental health needs
