SEND Inclusion Support are recruiting on behalf of a valued specialist school in Guildford for an experienced SEN Teacher to work with pupils with complex learning and communication needs.
This is a specialist teaching role suited to someone who is confident working with non-speaking pupils and young people with complex SEND, including those with PMLD, SLD and pre-formal developmental profiles.
The school is developing its provision and is looking for a teacher who can bring strong SEN pedagogy, creativity and a genuinely child-centred approach to the classroom.
The role
You will lead learning for pupils working within a pre-formal or semi-formal curriculum, with a strong focus on communication, engagement, development and independence.
You will need to be confident adapting learning around the individual pupil rather than relying solely on chronological age or traditional classroom approaches.
This may include:
Developing communication-led teaching for non-speaking pupils
Using AAC and other communication approaches
Planning sensory and engagement-based learning
Supporting pupils with complex learning and developmental needs
Using intensive interaction approaches where appropriate
Supporting sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing
Using developmental assessment to identify and celebrate progress
Supporting personal care and physical needs where required
Working closely with a high level of Teaching Assistant support
Developing meaningful, individualised learning opportunities
Working collaboratively with families and the wider specialist team
What we're looking for
We are looking for a teacher who has a strong understanding of specialist SEN practice and is confident working with pupils who may communicate, learn and engage in very different ways.
You may have experience within:
PMLD or SLD settings
Specialist autism provision
Complex needs schools
Pre-formal or semi-formal curriculum
AAC and alternative communication
Sensory-based learning
Intensive interaction
Complex physical or medical needs
Most importantly, you will understand that specialist SEN pedagogy comes first and that successful teaching starts with understanding how each individual pupil communicates, learns and experiences the world.
