Our client, a Local Authority in the East of England, is seeking an experienced Principal Litigation Lawyer to join their Legal Services team on a hybrid working basis, with attendance required for court and committee hearings. The postholder will be the Council's expert for all matters relating to criminal and civil litigation, providing technical and professional advice to officers and members and contributing to the overall direction of the Service.

Responsibilities of the Principal Litigation Lawyer:

  • Criminal Litigation in the Magistrates and Crown Courts including advising on, preparing for and representing the Council in connection with prosecutions and civil proceedings in the Magistrates court and appeals to the Crown Court/Court of Appeal and instructing/briefing counsel as necessary.
  • To undertake all Civil Litigation, advising on, preparing and representing the Council in Civil Proceedings at the County Court and Higher Courts and instructing/briefing Counsel as necessary.
  • To provide Licensing advice to the Licensing Authority, acting as Legal Adviser to the Licensing Sub Committee, dealing with appeals to the Magistrates Court in respect of licences under the Licensing Act 2003 and advising and representing the Authority on other Local Authority licensing matters including hackney carriages, private hire vehicles, street trading gambling and sex establishments.
  • To deputise for or represent the Chief Legal Officer.

Experience required for the Principal Litigation Lawyer role:

  • A qualified Solicitor, Barrister, Legal Executive or equivalent.
  • An experienced advocate in the Magistrates and County Court.
  • Experience of advising on whether there is sufficient evidence to issue proceedings or defend a case.
  • Experience of drafting summons and appropriate claim forms together with associated documents necessary for criminal and civil cases.
  • Experience in managing criminal and civil litigations cases through to completion (bringing in other legal expertise as appropriate).
