Sellick Partnership is working with a major UK infrastructure organisation to recruit a Commercial Legal Counsel into its Legal and Company Secretariat team within the Chief Finance Officer Directorate. This role supports the delivery of a nationally significant infrastructure programme and provides senior commercial and contractual advice across the organisation. You will lead on complex commercial and construction matters, supporting procurement, funding, utilities and public sector interfaces. You will work with minimal supervision, advising senior stakeholders on high value contracts and ensuring risk is managed while enabling the successful delivery of major projects. This role suits an experienced commercial or construction lawyer who enjoys working in a fast paced, high profile in-house environment.
Responsibilities
- Advise on high value commercial, construction, funding and procurement contracts across major infrastructure programmes
- Draft, review and negotiate complex agreements to protect the organisation's commercial and legal position
- Provide statutory and regulatory advice where required
- Support the resolution of contractual claims and disputes, managing external lawyers when appropriate
- Manage external legal advisers including cost, quality and delivery against agreed budgets
- Prepare and contribute to reports and briefings for senior leadership and government stakeholders
- Work closely with procurement and commercial teams to support contract strategy and risk allocation
- Act as a senior point of contact for internal clients on commercial and contractual matters
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your work
Experience / qualifications
- To be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with strong experience in commercial, contract or construction law
- A background advising on major projects, ideally within construction, infrastructure or the public sector
- Experience of public sector procurement and complex contracting
- Experience of managing external legal advisers within budget
- The ability to operate as a trusted adviser to senior stakeholders
- Strong drafting, negotiation and problem solving skills
- Experience gained in house or in private practice, and exposure to government departments, utilities or transport projects, would be an advantage.
