Overview of the Head of Service (Commercial Law) role:

Sellick Partnership is excited to be partnered with one of our highly regarded public sector clients to recruit a Head of Service role within Commercial Law. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified Solicitor/Lawyer to join this organisation as part of the Senior Leadership Team and help steer a well-respected commercial law team with clients across the public sector, alongside building business strategy and identifying potential new clients. This is a hybrid working role with office presence required twice a week.

This role will support the Executive Director, Heads of Service and other colleagues by contributing to the overall management of the team including staff performance, financial compliance and practice management. You may also be required to deputise for the Executive Director where required. This truly is a fantastic opportunity to lead a successful team from the top, to hold influence and help guide this organisation forward whilst steering the new generations of lawyers coming through the ranks all whilst developing your own career and expertise in a senior management role.

Main accountabilities of the Head of Service (Commercial Law) include:

  • Managing the Commercial Law team, providing assistance to fee earners whilst developing and maintaining relationships with clients.
  • Managing and dealing with challenges or concerns that may arise across the service.
  • Provide high quality, innovative and practical legal advice to a wide range of clients alongside elected members and senior officers.
  • Managing complex caseloads of contracts and procurement law; delivering advice and support in a timely manner.
  • Leading and managing a team of professional legal staff both qualified and non-qualified, ensuring they have the support, tools and knowledge to provide excellent client care.
  • Lead on the development of existing business relationships whilst seeking out new external clients through identification, marketing and promoting the service.

Key requirements for the Head of Service (Commercial Law):

  • Applicants are required to be a qualified Solicitor/Lawyer in England or Wales OR a member of the BAR, having completed pupillage.
  • Applicants will also have legal expertise across both contentious and non-continuous contract and procurement law.
  • Previous experience of leading and managing a team is essential.
