We are excited to be recruiting a Housing and Civil Litigation Assistant Principal Lawyer to join our Local Authority client's busy but friendly legal team. Our client is seeking an Assistant Principal Lawyer experienced in housing and civil litigation to join their team on a permanent basis, playing a key role in the management and development of the team and carrying a varied caseload including general residential/commercial property advice, disrepair, homelessness, judicial reviews, debt recovery, and other civil litigation work.

This opportunity is offered on a hybrid working basis, with a requirement to attend the office two days per week, as well as court attendance. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Lawyer with housing and civil litigation experience who is ready to take the next step into a leadership role or is already in such a role and seeking broader responsibility in a collaborative and supportive environment. You will gain hands-on management experience while continuing to develop a high-quality and complex caseload within a well-regarded local authority legal team.

Key responsibilities of the Housing and Civil Litigation Assistant Principal Lawyer:
  • To work closely with the Principal Lawyer and other Assistant Principal Lawyers in the management, development and performance of the team.
  • To advise and manage a varied and complex caseload of housing and civil litigation matters including homelessness, possessions, disrepair etc., as well as general civil litigation work.
  • To advise on high profile and sensitive matters including advising senior officers and elected members at council meetings.
  • To represent the team in client liaison meetings, being able to provide clear and practical advice and support service delivery.
  • To supervise, mentor, and support team members, including junior lawyers and legal assistants.
Experience/qualifications required for the Housing and Civil Litigation Assistant Principal Lawyer position:
  • You must be a qualified Lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister or CILEx with Litigation and Advocacy Rights or Higher Rights) with a current practising certificate.
  • Able to work on a hybrid basis with two days per week required in the office as well as attending court.
  • Able to work full-time; applicants looking to work 4 days may be considered.
  • You must have experience in housing law and civil litigation; previous local authority experience is necessary for this position.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a complex caseload and support others in doing the same.
  • Have strong communication skills, with the confidence to advise senior stakeholders and elected members.
