Job Purpose
The Pastoral Lead will lead and manage the pastoral provision across the school. They will ensure that students\\\’ well-being, behaviour, attendance, and welfare are supported effectively, working alongside SENCO, leadership, teaching staff, parents/carers, and external agencies.
Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and monitor the pastoral strategy and policies to promote high standards of behaviour, attendance, emotional well-being, and inclusion.

Oversee behaviour management systems, including sanctions, rewards, interventions, and restorative practices.

Provide targeted intervention for students needing extra pastoral support (e.g. mentoring, social skills groups, emotional regulation).

Lead on attendance: monitor attendance data, identify patterns of absence, liaise with families, and implement strategies to improve attendance and punctuality.

Act as safeguarding deputy (or liaise closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead), ensuring all students are safe and protocols are followed.

Support transitions (e.g. new admissions, moves between year groups, reintegration after absence).

Liaise with SENCO, therapists, external agencies, and families to ensure joined-up care.

Provide guidance, training, and support to staff on pastoral care, behaviour management, mental health issues, and managing challenging behaviour.

Maintain accurate records, evaluate the impact of pastoral initiatives, and report to senior leadership and governors.
Person Specification
Essential:
-
Experience working in a pastoral or welfare role in a school setting, preferably with SEN / SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) / behaviour-related challenges.

Strong understanding of safeguarding, behaviour management and supporting vulnerable children.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with pupils, staff, parents, and external stakeholders.

Ability to initiate, lead and manage pastoral projects and interventions, and to evaluate impact.

Empathy, resilience, flexibility, and a calm, patient approach.

Strong organisational skills, ability to prioritise, manage time effectively and maintain confidentiality.
Desirable:

Qualification in education, pastoral care, counselling, psychology or related field.

Experience of working with external agencies (e.g. mental health, social care).

Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches, restorative justice, mental health first aid or similar.
