Selby Jennings are partnered with a fast-growing specialist (re)insurance business on the appointment of a Lead Actuary - Business Planning to join its Capital function. Reporting to the Head of Capital, the successful individual will take ownership of the organisation's Business Planning Model, leading its design, development and governance and ensuring it provides a robust foundation for forecasting, valuation, capital allocation and longer-term strategic planning. This is a highly cross-functional role sitting at the intersection of actuarial, finance and strategy. You will work closely with stakeholders across Finance, Pricing, Reserving, Underwriting, Claims and Treasury, translating complex modelling outputs into clear commercial insight for senior management and supporting wider strategic decision-making across the business. The opportunity could suit someone from a capital, reserving, business planning or broader insurance financial-modelling background, with the emphasis on strong technical modelling capability, commercial understanding and the ability to take ownership of a strategically important model.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the Business Planning Model, leading its design, development, execution and ongoing enhancement.
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting and longer-term strategic planning through robust financial modelling and analysis.
- Develop scenario and sensitivity analysis to support senior management and board-level decision-making.
- Maintain strong model governance, including version control, integrity checks and documentation, ensuring outputs remain accurate, transparent and auditable.
- Work closely with Finance, Pricing, Reserving and Underwriting to translate business assumptions and modelling outputs into actionable commercial insight.
- Support underwriting transactions, investment appraisals and wider strategic initiatives through financial modelling and analysis.
- Manage the model's contribution to the annual business planning process and associated reporting.
- Present complex modelling outputs clearly and concisely to senior and non-technical stakeholders.
Skills & Experience
- Strong financial modelling experience gained within the insurance or reinsurance market.
- Experience building, developing or reviewing complex business planning, forecasting or financial models.
- Strong understanding of insurance financial statements, corporate finance principles and the interaction between business planning, valuation and capital.
- Good understanding of insurance capital management and relevant regulatory capital frameworks.
- Experience building deterministic models; exposure to stochastic modelling would be advantageous.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to translate technical analysis for senior and non-technical audiences.
