Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Bridgend or Bristol – Hybrid Working

Salary Range - £60,000 – £70,000 DOE + A great benefits package including car allowance and 6% pension contribution.

This role is truly an experienced mechanical building services designer's dream! Are you seeking greater technical influence, project ownership and the ability to shape how a design function operates? Because this role offers exactly that. You will be joining a well-respected building services contractor delivering significant projects across South Wales and the Southwest, where the in-house design team plays a central role in driving technical excellence from concept through to handover.

With well-established design hubs in Bridgend and Bristol, you will have the unique flexibility to choose your base and benefit from a collaborative environment that values leadership, innovation and practical problem-solving!

The Opportunity

As Senior Design Engineer, you will lead mechanical design packages across RIBA Stages 2–5, act as a technical authority within the team, and represent the business confidently in client and coordination meetings. You will have the autonomy to shape design standards, influence workflows, and guide junior engineers, while remaining hands-on with complex, challenging design work.

This position is perfect for someone already trusted to run projects who now wants broader responsibility, greater strategic input, and the chance to make a genuine impact within a growing design function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical building services design from early concept through detailed design stages
  • Produce and critically review calculations, drawings, reports and specifications
  • Oversee BIM-related requirements and contribute to coordination and clash resolution meetings
  • Work closely with project engineers, site teams and external partners to ensure smooth delivery
  • Mentor junior designers and uphold high technical and quality standards across the design office

What you’ll need

Essential

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in mechanical building services design
  • Proven ability to lead design work packages and engage confidently with clients
  • Strong 2D/3D modelling capability and understanding of BIM workflows
  • Able to review, guide and support the work of less experienced engineers

Desirable

  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
  • Chartered status (or working towards it)
